Dr. Tom Murad, The IEEE Canada President & Director IEEE – R7.

A member of the Engineering Order of Honour – Professional Engineers Ontario “PEO”, is a respected Technology leader, Innovator, thinker, Board Member, award-winning Educator, and distinguished speaker & advocate of innovation and creativity, specifically in the Areas of:

Engineering & Technology, Mechatronics, Digitalization, Smart Infrastructure, Industry – 4.0 & 5.0, Leadership, and technical education & Talents/skills development.

He Joined Siemens in Canada (2010 – 2023). His latest role was the “Country Lead (V.P.) of Engineering, Technical Excellence & Academics”, as well as being the founder & Director of the Awards winning “Siemens Canada Engineering and Technology Academy (SCETA)”, and the Siemens Mechatronics Systems Certification Program (2014 – 2020).

Prior to that, he held different Executive Management & C – Level roles with an extensive career in Professional Engineering, Innovative Technical Operations and including Academia and R&D work.

He is now Adjunct Professor at the College of Engineering & Physical Sciences – University of Guelph, “CTO” of Innoventus Engineering Inc., and a member of various Boards of Directors in Industry and Academia.

Matthew Wilder’s Bio:
Matthew Wilder is a Senior Engineer with TELUS Communications, a leading ISP and technology company headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. At TELUS, Matthew is responsible for IP Address Management and IPv6 strategy. Matthew serves the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as the West Area Chair of IEEE Canada. He also serves the Vancouver Section as Chair of the Conference Committee and has previously served as Chair of the Vancouver Section in 2022. Matthew also volunteers with the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) as the Advisory Council’s Vice Chair. He has written articles for IEEE Canadian Review and blogs for ARIN, ISOC, and other industry publications. Matthew holds a Bachelor of Applied Sciences from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Victoria.

Usman Munawar’s Bio:

Mr. Usman Munawar is an accomplished IEEE Senior Member & HKN with over 12 years of experience bridging industry and academia. A seasoned electrical engineer and researcher, he has made significant contributions to the field, authoring 17 publications in esteemed journals, transactions, and conferences. His extensive expertise includes overseeing 125+ engineering design projects, addressing 25+ data science challenges, integrating 50+ industrial systems, and coding over 300 algorithms—from small-scale solutions to large, complex systems.

Mr. Munawar earned his M.A.Sc. in Electronic Systems Engineering from the University of Regina, Canada, where he was named to the Dean’s Honor List. He was also awarded the prestigious IEEE PES Outstanding Student Scholarship (2020). His academic journey includes completing Stanford University’s Technology Entrepreneurship program (2012), participating in Oxford and Cambridge’s Smart Village program (2017), and visiting the MIT Media Lab as an IEEE Delegate (2022).

Currently, Mr. Munawar serves as Project Manager at Powertech Labs Inc. (a subsidiary of BC Hydro), where he leads critical initiatives in Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and founded the Future Energy Integration Lab. His expertise spans Smart Grid technologies, energy disaggregation, predictive maintenance, optimization, machine learning, deep learning, data mining, forecasting, and smart infrastructure solutions, with applications in Smart Cities and Smart Villages.

Previously, he worked as a Design and Development Engineer at Greenwave Innovations Inc. (2021–2023), where his contributions led to three international/national product awards. In 2017, he launched a successful renewable energy startup, completing 50 projects in just six months. Prior to 2019, he held academic roles, securing funding from major agencies such as USAID, UNESCO, and GIZ for impactful projects, including the deployment of solar-powered lighting in 133 sports facilities.

Kristina Cormier’s Bio:

Kristina Cormier is a fourth-year Computer Science student at Okanagan College. She has always been curious about science and technology. Recently, she has discovered a passion for data analysis and machine learning algorithms. Kristina is the Chair of the Okanagan College IEEE Student Branch. She coordinates with her team to help organize events and volunteering. Kristina truly enjoys mentoring, meeting new people and discovering new opportunities.

Abstract:

With the ever-increasing rate of cyber-attacks and data breaches, it has become essential for everyone to be aware of at least the basics of cybersecurity to safeguard themselves from harm. With this workshop, we aim to equip people with knowledge of techniques used by attackers and ways to defend against them, along with best practices for working with sensitive data. The workshop will include sessions by industry experts and demonstrations for practical applications of cybersecurity concepts and tools. Students will demonstrate cybersecurity-related topics (TBA).

Bios:

Troy Berg’s professional world is an exciting blend of academia and practical fieldwork. He is living the IT professional’s dream.

Troy is a professor and chair of the Infrastructure and Computing Technology Department at Okanagan College in Kelowna, BC, where he shares his passion for technology by teaching server administration, enterprise network management, cybersecurity, ethical hacking, and project management. His ongoing goal is to engage, educate, mentor, and inspire new IT professionals in a fun, dynamic, student-centred learning environment.

Alongside his academic persona, Troy captains a private IT training and consulting business. He provides practical and innovative solutions that allow his clients to leverage IT opportunities and turn technology into a competitive advantage.

Troy’s IT toolkit includes nearly 20 years of industry experience, a diploma in Network and Telecommunications Engineering, a Bachelor of Applied Information Systems Technology in Network Management, and numerous industry accreditations, including his Cisco Certified Network Associate (RS), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, CompTIA Network+ and Security+ certifications. Troy is also a certified Cisco Networking Academy instructor for A+, CCNA, and CCNA-Security curricula.

David Birch has been at Okanagan College for over 7 years, has a B.Sc. in Computer Science accompanied by CISSP and Associate C|CISO security certifications, and brings over 30 years of diverse IT industry experience from the private and public sectors to the College.

As the Manager of IT Security, Dave leads the IT Services cybersecurity team to oversee the Security Operations Center (SOC) and overall IT Security program. Dave is also an active member of several BCNet Higher Education Security steering committees and working groups, the sitting chair of the Distributed Cybersecurity Incident Response Team (DCSIRT) and was a lead member of the incident response effort during the Okanagan College ransomware event in January 2023.

Ajitesh Parihar is a four-year Computer Science student and a Research Assistant at Okanagan College. He is a tech enthusiast who enjoys learning about innovations and technologies and is passionate about software engineering, cyber security, and algorithms. Ajitesh is excited to get more involved as a Board Member of the IEEE Student Branch and to meet and work with talented individuals.

Kristina Cormier is a third-year Computer Science student at Okanagan College. She has a nursing background and recently discovered a passion for machine learning algorithms. Kristina is a board member of the Okanagan College IEEE Student Branch. She assists with organizing events and volunteering. Kristina truly enjoys being a mentor and helping others.

Siarhei Fedarovich
A renowned Program and Project Manager with vast expertise in devising cybersecurity strategies. He has a Master of Engineering degree and 13+ years of experience in IT software development and management. Siarhei has been delivering cybersecurity solutions since 2022.

Julia Kanaikina joined IBA Group as a Software Developer in 2009 and was soon promoted to Project Manager. Since then, she has been key in various Mainframe system development projects for industry leaders such as IBM, Fujitsu, and Rocket. Due to her exceptional performance and comprehensive understanding of the software development process, she was promoted to Delivery Manager in 2022.

Lapko Tsimafei is a DevSecOps specialist with over 14 years of experience in software development, testing, security and operations.

Sergii Baibara currently serves as the Director of IBA BGroup, a Regional office of IBA Group, a position he has held since July 2012. IBA Group—30 years in IT business, started as a JV with IBM. He has 26 years of experience in the IT software business, Including S&T AG and SAS Institute. Sergii has been developing RPA practices since 2016.

IBA Group (Security Services) is one of the largest IT service providers in the CEE region and has a worldwide organizational structure. It offers a portfolio of proprietary products that address different customers’ needs. Its software products are designed using the latest technologies and proven techniques. Data Warehousing Workshop II (Part II)

Abstract:

This workshop was developed for the Computer Science students with Database Systems Option or with a similar specialization (BCIS program at OC: https://www.okanagan.bc.ca/bachelor-of-computer-information-systems-degree). It can be especially a subject of interest for the students involved in industrial applied research. This workshop can be useful for anybody interested in Data Warehousing and current trends in the industry with a minimal background in DBMS systems, especially if you are going to build your own data warehouse at your company or for learning purposes. The following materials will be used during the workshop: The Data Warehouse Toolkit: The Definitive Guide to Dimensional Modeling By: Ralph Kimball, Margy Ross (https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/the-data-warehouse/9781118530801/), Oracle® Database Data Warehousing Guide (https://docs.oracle.com/en/database/oracle/oracle-database/19/dwhsg/database-data-warehousing-guide.pdf) and some other additional sources.

In the Part II we continue discussion about Data Warehousing foundation and we are going to discuss specific Data Warehousing implementations from the “The Data Warehouse Toolkit: The Definitive Guide to Dimensional Modeling” book. We will have Q&A in the last hour.

Speakers Bio:

Youry Khmelevsky received his Ph.D. degree in computer science and MSc in Electrical Engineering. His current research interests include software engineering; cloud and high-performance computing; enterprise-wide information systems; no programming paradigm, blind computing; and interdisciplinary applied computer science research. Dr. Khmelevsky had served as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University; was a Visiting Scientist in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); was an Invited Researcher at Database Management and Machine Learning Department, Sorbonne University, Paris, France; held engineering and R&D positions in Industry in Europe and North America for about 15 years, including at Alberta Energy, Government of Alberta, Canada.

Abstract:

This workshop was developed for the Computer Science students with Database Systems Option or with a similar specialization (BCIS program at OC: https://www.okanagan.bc.ca/bachelor-of-computer-information-systems-degree). It can be especially a subject of interest for the students involved in industrial applied research. This workshop can be useful for anybody interested in Data Warehousing and current trends in the industry with a minimal background in DBMS systems, especially if you are going to build your own data warehouse at your company or for learning purposes. Speaker Bio:

Youry Khmelevsky received his Ph.D. degree in computer science and MSc in Electrical Engineering. His current research interests include software engineering; cloud and high-performance computing; enterprise-wide information systems; no programming paradigm, blind computing; and interdisciplinary applied computer science research. Dr. Khmelevsky had served as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University; was a Visiting Scientist in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); was an Invited Researcher at Database Management and Machine Learning Department, Sorbonne University, Paris, France; held engineering and R&D positions in Industry in Europe and North America for about 15 years, including at Alberta Energy, Government of Alberta, Canada.
